Energy Saving Tips For Your Home
10 Tips to Help You & Your Air Conditioner Beat the Heat
1. Check the air filter and replace it frequently. A dirty filter causes your system to work harder.
2. Keep the area around your outside unit free from debris. Leaves, grass, weeds, plants, etc can block the airflow to your unit. If you have plants and shrubs around your unit for appearance reasons, make sure there is 2-4 feet of clearance.
3. Provide shade for your outdoor unit. The air in shaded places is cooler meaning your air conditioner will have a little easier time cooling the air as it enters the system.
4. Install a programmable thermostat to help keep the air conditioning from running when you are not at home. By programming the system to be on when you are at home and off (or at least at higher temperatures) when you are away, you can save on your energy costs.
5. Make sure the area around your thermostat is clear of lamps, appliances, computers, or televisions. The heat produced by these items can be sensed by the thermostat and will cause your system to run longer than necessary.
6. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees if possible. Each degree below 78, increases your energy consumption by approximately 8%.
7. Have your ductwork inspected. Many homes have ductwork that was not properly installed and/or sealed causing cool air to leak into your attic or crawl space.
8. Have a professional tune-up, cleaning, and safety inspection performed on your air conditioning system by a trained technician. (click here to learn more about our Pro”Tech”tionPlus Maintenance Plans)
9. Consider adding a to automatically set back the temperature in unused areas, which can cut heating & cooling costs as much as 20%. (click hereto learn more about zone control systems)
10. Consider new, energy-efficient equipment. Your current air conditioning system will lose it’s efficiency over time and result in lost capacity and leading to higher utility costs. Today’s air conditioning systems are much more efficient than those installed just 10 years ago and will provide a “pay-back” on the new equipment through energy savings.
8 Tips for Winter Heating Energy Savings
1. Install a programmable thermostat and program the heating system to lower temperatures when the house is unoccupied or at night.
2. Keep the temperature at 68 degrees or lower.
3. Inspect filters once per month during the heating season. Clean or replace if they are dirty.
4. Install a whole-house humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home. The dry air during the winter makes the air feel colder. By adding some humidity to the air, it will feel warmer allowing you to keep your temperature set lower.
5. Have your ductwork inspected. Many homes have ductwork that was not properly installed and/or sealed causing cool air to leak into your attic or crawl space.
6. Have a professional tune-up, cleaning, and safety inspection performed on your heating system by a trained technician. (click here to learn more about our Pro"Tech"tion Plus Maintenance Plans)
7. Consider adding a zone control system to automatically set back the temperature in unused areas, which can cut heating & cooling costs as much as 20%. ( to learn more about zone control systems)
8. Consider new, energy-efficient equipment. Today’s furnaces are 80-95% efficient compared to older units that were only approximately 60% efficient or less.
